delightfully scatterbrained art rock; psychedelic without being hippie/granola; effervescent feminine vocals
experimental
Deerhunter
Here's an in studio session. I love these raw recordings. Heatherwood sounds truer to its lyrics: frail and naked, much slower than the disk version. Dr. Glass is magnificent and poppy reminding me a bit of early Police. The maracas are a nice touch. Activa is in their more experimental vien. Cox's vocalisms are amazing in this one.
Live Spiders (the guy from Bright)
Live Spiders is Joe LaBrecque of Bright. Please check out Bright's page (www.myspace.com/brightsounds) and the pages for Nonloc (www.myspace.com/nonloc and www.nonloc.com), the fantastic solo project of Bright's Mark Dwinell.
Pterodactyl
Undeservingly underrated. Stupefyingly brilliant use of the correct mix of melody, dissonance, feedback, noise, and rhythm. Plenty of freely downloadable material here. I love it all, but three succeed stands out as a favorite.
Fuck Buttons
don't be put off by their name, these two guys make ultra rad mind bending noise infused melodies - heavy distortion - one of the darlings of the 2008 sxsw music festival
Mr. Gnome
Comparisons abound, pfft! Make no mistake, Mr. Gnome has their own sound: yin & yang, tension & release, war & peace, mosh & gaze, and yes man & woman. A band who understands dynamics? o_O
Animal Collective
Prepare to have your minds blown. Not sure where to place 'em: rock, pop, electronic, psychadelic. Whatever the case these guys rock! Hmm... Baltimore who'da thought?
Cadence Weapon
Come get clever lyrics and experimental beats/samples to satisfy your esoteric hip hop tastes. Plenty of tracks from his first LP Breaking Kayfabe & new release Afterparty Babies.
Xiu Xiu
Some find 'em difficult, but give it a few listens, let your mind wrap around it, and it'll be worth the effort. Great care has been taken crafting these beautifully morose songs. Highly creative!
The Books
Highly experimental and utterly interesting, The books are found sound musicians: "We do all of our own sample collecting, composing, writing, recording, mixing, and mastering in our home studios using pc's running cheap software and the ragtag equipment that we've pieced together over the years.
