Folk
Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps
A gritty story teller weaving tragedies, triumphs, smiles, and scorns with a charming voice and a folksy sound. She reminds me a bit of Mazzy Star, but that's only a first impression. Here's an in studio session with four streamable songs. Enjoy!
Beirut
Beauty through strange circumstance: a wrist injury and a European trip have produced such such an interesting sound. Zach Condon's inability to grasp a guitar neck led him to play ukulele, and after dropping out of high school to tour Europe he became influenced by Balkan gypsy music. Luck aside, Zach's sultry voice, songwriting craft, and multi-instrument musical skill complete the package.
Bon Iver
With soul and passion Bon Iver takes a traditional format in new directions. Skinny Love is my new favorite song.
Nicfit
Acoustic guitar, original lyrics, punk influences. Check out the song titled "Dope Fiend".
Thao
tangles of guitar, knots of singing, threads of beat and thump make a rope fit for hauling the heavy machinery of your day - Thao
Bonnie Prince Billy
do-it-yourself punk aesthetic and blunt honesty - unique voice--a fragile sort-of warble frittering around haunted melodies in the American folk or country tradition -> Baldwin, C.
Sufjan Stevens
Sufjan is a master songwriter and multi-instrumentalists (proficient on over 20 instruments). His music is highly experimental and difficult to pigeon hole into any specific genre, although folk is seems a good fit to me.
Jason Reeves
"im not sure what is a dream and what is real...i still can't say for certain if falling asleep is opening your eyes in the morning or closing them at night...i want love like love wants love..oxygen and drifting clouds. and im not scared to be alive...i write music because it feels like breathing. i sing because it is connection. would it all come out the same way again?? Iron & Wine
Raised in South Carolina, Beam released his first album, The Creek Drank the Cradle, on the Sub Pop label in 2002. Beam wrote, performed, recorded, and produced every track on the album by himself at a studio in his home. His music is often characterized as alt-country, progressive folk, or indie folk, and lyrical themes often follow a Southern Gothic paradigm. -Wikipedia
