Dream pop two piece, Beach House, has that vaguely familiar sound that you just can't place, a result of being accessible yet innovative. You hear history in their sound like they spent some time with with Mom's old 45s.

PJ Harvey
hardly under the radar - posting this link b/c Polly Jean reinvents herself, yet again - stripped down, haunting, and folksy, but as unnervingly honest as ever
John Vanderslice
Here's a thoughtful songwriter, multi-talented musician, and old school analog recording purist. I'm feeling a little dirty linking to mp3 recordings of this analog craftsman. Whatsa guy ta do with this interweb thing an stuff? There's a wealth of links and downloads here. Thanks JV.
31 Knots
completely original - experimental without being difficult to listen to - heavy and raw - here is a "live" (one take) recording + interview from the good folks at WOXY, Cincinati - enjoy
Instruments
London based math rockers knit energetic guitars, harmonic chimes, with rambling base lines, and angular rhythms. Bright Eyes Make for Good Dogs stands out with its howling vocals.
31 Knots
raw, raucus, and honest - this is what rock and roll should be - 31 Knots delivers
The Fiery Furnaces
Quixotic and fun, the Furnaces surprise me like one of those freak hiccups that come out of nowhere and halt you in mid sentence. Look elsewhere for yer formulaic hum-drum radio pop.
Sunset Rubdown
Yet another wonderful band of Canucks. Beautifully layered indie rock delivered to us as if a live performance thanks to the good folks at daytrotter. Indeed, the bottoms of my pant legs are burning.
