Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps
A gritty story teller weaving tragedies, triumphs, smiles, and scorns with a charming voice and a folksy sound. She reminds me a bit of Mazzy Star, but that's only a first impression. Here's an in studio session with four streamable songs. Enjoy!
Tobacco
Analog electronic practitioner Tobacco uses whacked out synths & beats that are easy to label psychedelic. But much more, it's mad nasty funk. Here's two downloads: Dirt featuring Aesop Rock and Truck Sweat.
Silver Jews - Tanglewood Numbers Demo
The Dylan of our generation: David Berman writes lyrics that'll knock yer socks off. Throw Stephen Malkmus (Pavement) into the mix and you've got a recipe for greatness. Here's the Demo recordings for the Tanglewood Numbers LP (2005).
Dosh - Live
A multi-instrumental loop experimentalist weaving dense audioscapes with strong rhythm foundations. That's the left brain description.
The Monks
Mind-blowingly way, way ahead of their time, active during the 60s, The Monks tore down the concept of what rock music should be. They epitomize what good underground music is all about: "musicians smart enough (or dumb enough or crazy enough) to come up with something new." Spazz Chandler
Atlas Sound - Things I'll Miss EP
Bradford Cox posted this 5 track EP on his blog - Track 1 (My Car) is hazy surf pop goodness - Track 2 (My Room) is chanting loop modulation - Track 3 (My Bed) is Tibetan monastery wind chime - Track 4 (Recording Acoustic Drums) i needn't say more - Track 5 (Marietta) is romantic and perverse, delicately composed with great attention to detail, magnificent
Le Loup
At times folk, at times synth pop, entirely enticing: brimming with catchy new ideas here is an emerging artist poised to break out.

Wilco (Live)
brilliant band - talented, laden with originality and verve, laid back in their alt-country tradition - recorded at Washington, D.C.'s 9:30 Club Feb, 27th, 2008
Xiu Xiu
Some find 'em difficult, but give it a few listens, let your mind wrap around it, and it'll be worth the effort. Great care has been taken crafting these beautifully morose songs. Highly creative!
Thao
tangles of guitar, knots of singing, threads of beat and thump make a rope fit for hauling the heavy machinery of your day - Thao
